daisuke yamashita architects has completed a residential structure by utilizing local, industrial materials. the residence, a space for a family of five, is located in aisai city, in japan’s aichi prefecture. as a result of controlled urbanization efforts in the area, the surrounding land is largely empty. with this particular context, the architects opted to utilize basic, yet sophisticated geometries. the building is mainly composed of an 8.2 meter cube segmented into a nine-grid three story structure.

the daisuke yamashita-designed residence rests lightly on a concrete base, while the strength and support of the structure comes from latticed steel H-beams, foundation and braces, as well as eight slender steel pillars supporting the vertical load in the center and four corners of the building. ‘w ithin this cubic volume, on the exterior of the completely internalized spaces, we inserted three large semi-outdoor spaces,’ describe the architects. ‘the interior aluminum sash panels and exterior translucent polycarbonate folding doors can be opened and closed, creating dynamic indoor and outdoor environments: an intermediary region that allows for flexible space usage.’ the exterior is covered in galvanized steel and polycarbonate corrugated sheets.
